My mom has always been incredibly talented with sewing. She sewed her own wedding gown, has made and altered many dresses and outfits, and lovingly sewed beads and sequins from my late Grandma Ruthie into the lace trim of my wedding gown. It is truly an act of love. Looking at the fine details and knowing the hours of time she devotes to these projects makes them so special. I had the privilege of capturing photos of these Little Angel Gowns made from my Grandma Ruthie’s wedding dress. This project is extra near and dear to my heart.
In the last year since my mom has retired, she applied to volunteer her time and talent to make Little Angel Gowns for a wonderful charity that provides gowns for infants that are lost too soon. The company has volunteers repurpose wedding gowns into these beautiful memorial gowns and keepsakes for the family. https://www.littleangelgowns.org/
My mom has made many gowns now, but she finally undertook an extra special project- repurposing her mother’s wedding dress. She had a special vision for my Grandma Ruthie’s dress. Grandma Ruthie and Papa Joe left a legacy of seven children, but also lost a pair of twins boys shortly after birth. My mom used Grandma Ruthie’s dress to create gowns for two baby boys and asked me to capture photos for her before she sent them off to the charity.
She also sewed a beautiful baby girl gown along with special heart keepsakes for the families. I am in awe of my mom’s talent and selfless giving of her time, talent, and special treasure, especially her mom’s wedding gown.
One of my favorite details is my Grandma Ruthie’s crown. When I captured these photos, my mom told me “I never thought it was pretty before,” but absolutely loved seeing it captured in photos. It’s amazing to see details through the eyes of someone else. I think her vintage crown is so special, and I’m glad we have that as a keepsake!
I’m so proud of my mom and the beautiful gift she is providing to families in a time of need, and I’m so grateful to have gotten to capture these photos for her to remember her mother’s gown and her twin brothers.
